Fly rod flippin' can help in bream fishing

Tiger Generators Many of us focus too much on how far we can cast and not howaccurately we can case. Flippin' with a fly rod can put a breambait right where you think it will produce a fish. Don't worryabout reeling in a fish with a fly rod. That reel is for storingline, not for fighting a fish. Bring in the line hand over handwhen you have a strike.Rick Bates at Bates Field and Stream said the water is murky and atnormal level. Bream are fair in 15 to 20 feet of water on worms, wax worms and crickets. Crappie are fair in 6 to 8 feet of wateralong the north side of the lake on minnows and jigs. Bass fishingis good around lily pads on Trixie lures. Catfishing is fair onminnows.Conway Parks and Recreation Department said the water is murky andhigh. Crappie are fair around brush on minnows and jigs.Billy Lindsey at Lindsey's Resort said the water conditions arenormal with one generator running around the clock. Trout fishinghas been excellent on in-line spinner baits with a pink worm andyellow Power Bait.Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the hybrid bass andwhite bass fishing is hot. With the water being pulled down, theyare eating young fry coming out of the bushes and pushing them tothe top up on the banks. Use a very small bait to mimic the fry.Walleye are few and far between. A few can be caught on crank baitsup shallow, but the rest are on their way out deeper. Catfish arebiting pretty well all over the lake. Some bass are back shallowchasing bream in the bushes and will hit frogs, spinner baits andsmall crank baits. A lot of the bass are in 22-25 feet of water onthe tips of points or on gravel flats making their way to pointtips. They can be caught dragging a rig, football head jig or aTexas-rigged worm in crabapple or grasshopper colors. Buzz baitsand Zara Spooks are working in the same places early and late inthe day until the sun gets high.Coffee Creek Landing said water conditions are normal. Bream arebiting well on crickets and worms. Bass are biting well on plasticworms and buzz baits. Catfishing is good on worms.Lakeview Landing said water conditions are normal. Bream are bitingwell on crickets and red worms. Crappie are biting well on minnows.Catfishing is fair on nightcrawlers.Overcup Landing said the water is murky and at normal level withsurface temperature in the low 80s. Bream are fair around the bankson crickets and wax worms. Bass are biting well on topwater baits.Catfishing is good on trotlines and yoyos with minnows, nightcrawlers and bream.Overcup Landing said the water is murky and at normal level. Allfishing is fair.Roger Nesuda at Jolly Roger's Marina said bass fishing continues tobe good. Largemouth bass and spotted bass are holding just outsidethe weed line and can be caught on spinner baits and Carolina rigs. The best bite is in the first two hours of the day on the northbanks. Bream fishing is excellent. The bream should be bedding upagain very soon. Patrick Point and the old Jolly Rogers Marina areproducing well. Crappie are 10 to 25 feet deep and are hittingminnows and small jigs. Catfishing is good on live and preparedbaits in 10 to 20 feet of water. White bas are fair with someschooling reported around Jim's Island.Charlie Hoke at Charlie's Hidden Harbor at Oppelo said the flow isstill well over 100,000 cubic feet per second, but fishing is verygood below the dams and in the backwater. Catfishing is very goodbelow dams nine and 10. Use a 3 to 6-ounce weight on a three-wayrig baited with live bream. Channel catfish are biting well onliver and worms around Flagg Lake Cutoff, Coppers Gap and GalaCreek. White bass are chasing shad early and late in the day on thebackside of jetties. Wobble spoons and Sassy Shads are taking quitea few. Black bass are biting well. Early in the morning, try a buzzbait or Jitterbug under overhangs. Later in the day move to 4 to 6feet of water and throw fire tiger crankbaits. Bream are bitingwell in the backwater in 1 to 3 feet of water on crickets. Crappieare on the backs of jetties and in the creeks and are biting fairlywell on minnows fished around wood.In the Little Rock area, Vince Miller at Fish 'N Stuff said thewater is still really rough and fishing has been slow. A few basshave been caught in the backwater on jigs and frogs.John Berry of Berry Brothers Guides said water flows have beensignificantly higher than the past weeks. As a result, it has notfished as well. The lower flows have been around six generatorswith the higher flows being more like eight. With water this high, you are required to fish from a boat to achieve any level ofsuccess. The upper river from the catch and release section at thebase of Bull Shoals dam to Cane Island Shoals which is usually ahot spot has yielded few fish. Some anglers, however, have beensuccessful. The key to success has been to use conventional highwater techniques. The hot flies have been brightly colored San Juanworms (red, cerise, and fire orange and hot fluorescent pink) andegg patterns (pink, orange, tan and red). To get the flies down usecopious amounts of lead and a huge strike indicator to float all ofthis. If the water is 10 feet deep, the length of the tippet fromfly to indicator will be fifteen feet. A rig this heavy and longwill be a bit tricky to cast. Berry suggests a fairly open loop anda heavier rod than normal.
